Cheryl Schlitter
Biography

Aloha! My name is Cheryl. I am a rising senior at Green Hope High School. I first fell in love with Hula dancing when I was 6 years old on vacation in Hawai’i. I started dancing at the age of 7 at Halau Na Wai Ola (School of the Living Waters) in the San Francisco Bay Area under the instruction of Kumu Kaui Isa-Kahaku.

Yes, I once had short hair... Kumu Kaui, her daughter, Kanoe, and me. Competition '03 Dancing in competition '03, I'm second from the left.

I have performed in many Ho’ike (shows) and have danced with an award winning competition team for four years. We competed at the Ia 'Oe E Ka La Hula Festival in Pleasanton, California (2000-2003), George Naope Northwest Invitational Hula Festival in Seattle, Washington (2002), and at the Pacific Northwest Ka 'Ohana Aloha Hula Festival in Seattle, Washington (2003). We have won awards not only for dancing, but also for oli (Hawai’ian language/chanting). I participated in the E Pili Kakou workshops on the island of Kaua’i in 2000. I also performed at the “Sounds of Hawai’i” festival in 2003 and danced on-stage with Na Leo Pilimehana, named the top female vocal group in Hawai’i, for their holiday tour in 2003.

I have taught several sessions of Hula and Ori Tahiti classes for ages 6-14 at the Bond Park Community Center in Cary, North Carolina, and sessions of Ori Tahiti for ages 6 and up from Fall '05 through Spring '07.

Along with dancing Hula, my hobbies include playing cello and playing lacrosse as a goalie on the Green Hope High School Varsity Women's Lacrosse team.
